The Dublin Sketching Club was founded in 1874 by a group of prominent Irish artists. Among itsto promote a wider appreciation of the representational arts. It has, over its long history, held a unique position in the world of Irish art and has included many of Ireland,s most prominent artists among its membership. Including in the early years prominent members such as Walter Osborne, John Butler Yeats, Nathaniel Hone , Richard Orpen and Sara Purser. Over the years the Club has continued to prosper and included in its membership artists representing all mediums and styles. In 2000 to represent the range of the work of the members the name was changed to the Dublin Painting and Sketching Club. Membership of the Club is currently held at eighty and membership is achieved through a strict selection process. Thus today membership embraces many of Irelands leading artists. The Club has held an Annual Exhibition of members work since its inception, except for three years. This exhibition is very highly regarded and is attended by about three thousand members of the public over the course of its run. The Club as the oldest mixed media Art Group in Ireland holds a unique position in the world of Irish Art and through the development of its web site hopes to engage a wider audience.
