Before Thatcher was elected, tax law meant nearly all private investor savings went into life assurance and pension products. Private client stockbroking was largely the preserve of old, inherited, family money. The founding of Killik & Co was a development of the thinking behind the shareshops located in Debenhams department stores – for which I was responsible in my previous role as Head of Private Clients at Quilter Goodison. With Killik & Co, I wanted to provide relationship-based advisory stockbroking services to retail investors. Though many of these may not have had the large amounts of capital demanded by traditional firms, they certainly aspired to have them! It was, and remains, an important part of our philosophy to be accessible and unintimidating with a minimum commission of £30 and no minimum portfolio size required in order to open an account with us.
