Excessive preoccupation with young children, television may result in attention problems at school, reports the journal Paediatrics.
Scientists from the University of Otago, New Zealand (University of Otago) analyzed data from more than 1000 children.
They found that children aged 5-11 years on average spent watching television for about two hours. By 13-15 years the average duration of television viewing increased to 3.1 hours per day.
In children, with more than two hours watching television, 40 percent increased risk of disorders of attention to adolescence. Such dependence was observed both in boys and girls alike, said study leader Charles Lendhyus (Carl Landhuis). He noted that the risk of problems with the concentration of attention is not decreasing, even if the maturing child stopped watching TV.
"This may indicate that the adverse effect of television viewing can be maintained for a long time", - said Lendhyuz.
According to scientists, frequent changes of the plot, typical of most TV programs, can become too strong stimulus for an intensively developing child's brain. However, real life may seem too boring.
"Children who spend watching television a lot of time, may be worse in the subsequent transfer quieter and ordinary classes, in particular the educational process", - said Lendhyuz.
In addition, television watching may overshadow other, more useful classes that contribute to a better focus, in particular reading, games, sports, said the researcher.
